Education

Adolescent Development

Adolescence is a period of transformation, and the organization believes in investing in them. They call it a window of opportunity, with 1.2 billion adolescents worldwide and 90% living in low-income to middle-income countries. UNICEF works with health providers, governments and partners to ensure fair access for all. They advocate for adolescent rights, by working with families and community members. UNICEF also uses health providers to ensure that teens can receive the care they need, through mental health care, menstrual health and hygiene and through HIV prevention and treatment. Alongside health providers, they use government assistance to ensure access to quality education and aid in their development on the path to becoming an adult. 

Health

UNICEF states that every child has the right to survive and thrive. Millions of people continue to die due to causes that could be easily prevented with quality health care and strong health systems (malnutrition, mental health conditions, injuries). Living in poverty in low-income countries make basic services way more difficult to access, resulting in suffering. UNICEF works around the world to help with survival, health and well-being, and to strengthen healthcare systems. They have implemented immunization programs and preventative services in attempt to decrease the amount of maternal, newborn and child deaths. The organization has also strengthened national health plans and age-specific services to aid in the well-being of various communities.They have focused on strengthening services, supporting a primary health care approach and aiming to create universal healthcare that is quality and equitable to all in need.

How do they approach these services?

UNICEF emphasizes their commitment to offering equal opportunities that are in line with their proposed values. This includes vision, resourcefulness, resolve and inclusiveness when addressing treatments, programs and services. In an evidence-based decision making model, the organization uses an evaluation team at headquarters to research policies, programs, and partnerships and measures their effectiveness. This allows for improvement of future outcomes through evaluation of past and present experiences.
