Exploring Public Awarness of UNICEF

For this project, a series of interviews with individuals were conducted to get an understanding of their knowledge of UNICEF and the overall level of awareness surrounding the organization and its impact.

General Awarness

With about 80% of people who recognized UNICEF as a leading organization dedicated to improving children's lives worldwide, the public awareness of the organization is pretty high. However, there's a significant gap in understanding how big UNICEF's impact is:

  • 71% of respondents underestimated how many children UNICEF reaches, guessing they help 2 million children or fewer.

  • Only 28% accurately estimated the number of countries where UNICEF operates.

The organization works in over 190 countries and territories, reaching millions of children annually.

In 2022 alone:

  • 182.4 million children under 5 benefited from services to prevent and treat malnutrition.

  • 77.9 million children were vaccinated against measles.

  • 37.9 million out-of-school children access education.

Perceived challenges UNICEF faces

  • 67% identified insufficient funding and resources as UNICEF's biggest challenge

  • 33% mentioned accessibility to rural areas as a significant issue

  • 33% noted the challenge of finding volunteers

UNICEF's biggest challenge they face to try and improve the lives of children is their lack of funding.

UNICEF's Work

  • 100% of respondents underestimated UNICEF's reach, with respondents guessing from 100,000 to 2 million children who are helped each year.

In reality, UNICEF's impact reaches further than 2 million as they reach 190 countries, helping over 9 million children in 2023 alone with numbers growing each year.

Public Opinion

  • 100% of respondents viewed UNICEF positively

  • 67% believed that UNICEF should receive more recognition for their work

  • 33% emphasized the importance of global access to basic necessities

Overall Feedback

With the feedback we've received, there is a general understanding of a positive public perception of UNICEF but it is also revealed that there are gaps in the understanding of how impactful UNICEF truly is. Underscoring the need for increased awareness of the organization's work in improving children's lives worldwide.
