Emergency Response Teams
UNICEF's rapid response teams prioritize providing safe water, healthcare, hygiene kits, nutrition, and psychological support in emergency situations. They also work to identify children who have been separated from their parents or caregivers and facilitate their reunification. In addition, UNICEF supports recovery efforts by collaborating with governments and communities to help them become more aware and better prepared for future events. UNICEF's rapid response is ultimately determined through their Corporate Emergency Activation Procedure.
Corporate Emergency Activation Procedure
The Corporate Emergency Activation Procedure categorizes emergencies based on their scale, urgency, complexity, and the capacity of the affected offices. In a Level-3 emergency, the Executive Director initiates an organization-wide response, appointing a Global Emergency Coordinator (GEC) and increasing support from the Regional Office (RO) to the affected Country Offices (COs). In a Level-2 emergency, a CO requires additional assistance from the organization, and the Regional Director leads the response with enhanced support from the RO. A Level-1 emergency involves a crisis with a stand-alone Humanitarian Assistance Appeal (HAC), which isn't classified as a Level-2 or Level-3 emergency.
