Emergency Response Teams

UNICEF's rapid response teams prioritize providing safe water, healthcare, hygiene kits, nutrition, and psychological support in emergency situations. They also work to identify children who have been separated from their parents or caregivers and facilitate their reunification. In addition, UNICEF supports recovery efforts by collaborating with governments and communities to help them become more aware and better prepared for future events. UNICEF's rapid response is ultimately determined through their Corporate Emergency Activation Procedure.

Corporate Emergency Activation Procedure

The Corporate Emergency Activation Procedure categorizes emergencies based on their scale, urgency, complexity, and the capacity of the affected offices. In a Level-3 emergency, the Executive Director initiates an organization-wide response, appointing a Global Emergency Coordinator (GEC) and increasing support from the Regional Office (RO) to the affected Country Offices (COs). In a Level-2 emergency, a CO requires additional assistance from the organization, and the Regional Director leads the response with enhanced support from the RO. A Level-1 emergency involves a crisis with a stand-alone Humanitarian Assistance Appeal (HAC), which isn't classified as a Level-2 or Level-3 emergency.

Climate Crisis

UNICEF is focused on protecting children from the effects of climate change by adapting critical services to be more resilient and helping children and youth build the skills they need to adjust to a changing world. They also advocate for more funding and resources to support youth in climate action.

Earthquakes

When earthquakes occur, UNICEF quickly provides emergency supplies and supports government-led relief efforts to meet the immediate needs of children and families. They’ve been involved in rebuilding communities after earthquakes in places like Haiti, Mexico, and the Philippines.

Extreme weather disasters

As extreme weather events become more frequent due to climate change, UNICEF is one of the first responders, providing immediate assistance and prepositioning supplies. They’ve helped communities in Libya after Storm Daniel and in Pakistan after massive floods in 2022.

Food Crises

UNICEF is addressing food insecurity and child malnutrition in regions like the Sahel and the Horn of Africa, where severe drought and rising food prices have worsened conditions. They provide emergency aid, including nutrition treatment and mobile health teams, to help the most vulnerable children.

Gaza and Israel Conflict

The ongoing conflict between Gaza and Israel has left over a million children in dire conditions. UNICEF is calling for a ceasefire and safe access to provide essential supplies and is working to deliver critical aid to children trapped in the war zone.

Syria Crisis

The ongoing conflict and economic collapse in Syria have left millions of children in need of aid. UNICEF provides essential services like healthcare, education, and protection to children both inside Syria and in refugee camps across neighboring countries.

Ukraine War

UNICEF is providing emergency assistance to children impacted by the war in Ukraine, including access to clean water, nutrition, healthcare, and education. They also support child protection efforts for those in Ukraine and those seeking refuge in other countries.

Yemen Crisis

After years of conflict and economic instability, UNICEF is responding to the crisis in Yemen by addressing severe child malnutrition, providing vaccines, and improving access to clean water and sanitation, along with strengthening child protection services.
